about Claire Toney
"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." Wayne Gretzky
"You don't take a photograph, you make it." Ansel Adams
"Life Is Not Measured By the Number of Breaths We Take, But By the Moments That Take Our Breath Away." George Carlin
The quotes above are three of my favorites. They encompass the many reasons why I became a photographer. The first reminds me that if I have a dream, I have to reach for it. The second reminds me of the unique artist that is in me. It doesn't matter what equipment I have or don't have. What matters is that I can create something that no else can because of the fact that I am one of a kind. The third reminds me of my dad. When he passed away, I learned so much about his life from my mom & how far he came. With his faith in God & love for his family, he made a life here in America. He worked hard so that he could have a life full of moments that he once thought were dreams. This knowledge still takes my breath away.
I have been an artist all of my life & I love creating beautiful things. My favorite part of the creation process is taking something ordinary & turning it into something memorable. Photography allows me to do that for others. I can take something as ordinary as a simple day & turn it into a photograph that you can look at years, decades from now & remember the feelings you had when it was taken. How powerful is that?
My favorite photographs of my own family are the ones that reflect who the people are. While I enjoy the cute posed photos of my kids, I love the images that show their personalities. My daughter with her hands on her hips on a Cabo San Lucas beach or my son with his smirk, fighting a smile - I remember when those photos were taken & how I laughed when I pressed the shutter.
The one thing that I notice when I look back at our "old" family photographs is that I am not in many of them. I've become more attuned to this & still getting used to getting my picture taken, & NOT cringing. I've realized how important it is to have our whole family in the frame - not just the family minus the person behind the camera.
My approach is to create images that reflect the personalities of the people in them. I strive to provide affordable photography services to families, follow a sustainable business model that will allow me to contribute to my family's financial needs, and to offer the gift of photography to those in need by offering my services to The Gold Hope Project, Magic Hour, and Red Thread Sessions. I also continue to learn and hone my craft by being a proud member of several photography communities.
