Child Portraits | Vintage Styled Shoot

Looking at old photos always makes me think of how simple things were back when my grandparents were children. The simplicity of their clothing and poses - so understated yet beautiful and innocent. I've often thought about shooting old-time photos, but the challenge has always been finding just the right props. Well, I found a retro phone at my favorite thrift store a few weeks ago. I bought it with images of stylized vintage child portraits running through my mind. What made me more excited was that I knew the perfect mom that would let me borrow her child for a trial session! I scoped out a few places for this shoot. As with all of my natural light photo sessions, I was looking for someplace in nature but with some old details. This path with a wooden foot path was perfect. I met Kristin there with her daughter (A). I brought my phone and my favorite chair prop too. There were some bicyclists that rode by, but because my set up was not elaborate, we were pretty flexible.

Although not a documentary shoot, I did not pose A for this shoot. Rather, I let her play with the props, explore the area, and interact with her mom, while I followed her around with my camera. My favorite photos, though, are the in between shots, like the one of her looking at her mom. Kristin had just placed the hat on her head and A watched her step out of the frame. Such a sweet little face!  The innocence and love for her mom in those eyes are so precious.
