Family Documentary | Carmichael, CA

On August 12th, I headed up to Marlene and Rob’s house in Carmichael, CA for a Documentary Family Session with their two little ones at their home.

We spent the first part of our Documentary Family Session session in the backyard, where 5-year-old Mason was riding his bike and 2-year-old Penelope was playing on the playground. They fed their chickens, gathered eggs, painted, and played with bubbles while they were outside. One of my favorite images was of little Penelope through the bubble. Her sweet smile and obvious joy totally shine through in that picture.

Once we were inside, Marlene read a book with Penelope, and Mason helped his dad cut some wood for some pieces that Rob, who is a woodworker, was working on. I loved watching the interactions between Marlene and Rob and their kids, especially because Penelope and Mason are at that very active age. Somehow, these two were able to keep up with their little ones and even get in some quiet time, like the reading time!

Penelope played with Playdoh for a short while but then switched gears to help her mom make lunch. I loved watching the two of them together—and the shot of Penelope eating is one of my favorites.

Mason also decided that it would be fun to have a dance party in the middle of the living room, so he borrowed his dad’s headphones and danced to some music. His mom helped him into his ninja costume as well, since he had decided he wanted to wear that too.

I loved watching Mason play with his little sister, whether that was with Tinkertoys or just being around her. He was such a caring big brother, and since Marlene was newly pregnant at the time, it was obvious their next little one would be totally spoiled as well!

Marlene & Rob, thank you for welcoming me into your home and for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family!
