I cringe every time I flip through my old family photo albums.
There's a photo of me when I was 10. I have a boy haircut and am wearing my big pink glasses and a yellow outfit at the beach (yes, yellow - WTH was I thinking?). And another of me with the same haircut, but curled bangs. This time, I'm wearing a periwinkle colored dress with a lace collar, smiling at the camera. All of the pictures of me back then are more of the same - short boy-hair, splotchy skin, and glasses. Not a good time in my life for photos.
While I am glad that there are few photos of me from that time, I remember how emotionally difficult it was. The challenges of being a preteen haven't change from when I was 10. Tweens still feel the need to fit in, the desire to be independent, the wish to be admired and accepted by their peers. What a flurry of confusing emotions! Add all these to an influx of hormones, it's easy to see why your once bubbly 7- year old is now a moody tween.
I heard of a photography project from Lisa Edwards of Photo Bacon called the Who I Am Project and I'm hooked. After reading about Lisa's project, I signed up. Now, I will be offering it as part of my rolling photography portrait schedule.
The goal is simple: To help tweens see the beauty in themselves so they can start Junior High with confidence and strong self-image.
Who I’m looking for
I am looking for female models ages 9-12. I will send a questionnaire to the model, her parents, and a few people close to the model. I will then combine the text and photographs to create a beautiful and meaningful slideshow that I will present at each model's photo reveal.
The Reason Behind
I want to capture everything about the model that makes them special. The desire to fit in is strong at this age. I want them to see just how wonderful their real selves are and to know that they are cherished by people who know and love them. Imagine what your words might mean to your tween's self-image.
