Sacramento Central Farmer's Market

What summer means

Fill in the blank: Summer means ________ I am willing to bet you thought of things like the pool, the beach, lazy days, no school, sleeping in, etc.

Did you include Farmer's Markets?? Fresh strawberries, plums, and peaches, ripe corn, cucumbers and squash, lively music, colorfully dressed children wearing balloon flamingos on their heads, freshly made desserts and shaved ice - nothing is better during the hot summer months!

This summer, I'd like to take you on a visual tour of the farmers' markets near me. The first stop is the Sunday Farmer's Market under the freeway. It's huge and one of the best known in our area. It's open all year, although I've only visited during the warmer months. Parking is plentiful and there is never a shortage of baked goods, fresh produce, and friendly vendors.

Summer's gifts

And what is a farmer's market without pretty flowers? There were at least 3 flower vendors there, each with a different array of gorgeous blooms. The only thing that kept me from taking home a truckload was my self imposed  budget - "Only food!!!" Plus I only had 2 hands to hold my purchases and my camera. I had to choose. The flowers lost out.

I took a picture of cherries because this is the season. I LOVE Rainer Cherries, more than Bing. Every May, I look forward to buying bags of them, rinsing them in cold water and sprinkling them with salt. It's a sweet and salty thing that my father got me into. Most fruit tastes great this way, in case you want to try something different.

Where being with your community never gets old

Outdoor markets are a living reminder that even as technologically savvy and modern we think we are, a lot of us still appreciate the simplicity of food straight from the farm, bakery, or winery. It's a place that we can take our kids and know they won't see anything inappropriate. It's where you can see the person behind the food you are buying, and know that you are supporting that person's livelihood. It's also a place where you can see our community and understand that we are not as different as we think we are.
