At sporadic times during the year, I get ideas for stylized photo shoots that I think would be fun to have. In an ideal world, summers would be full of slow days, bare feet, no responsibility, and spending time with people you care about. Add a well-worn straw hat and you've got a Huckleberry Finn-themed photo shoot.
Grayson is my friend's playful son. Playful as in "extremely extroverted and so happy you can't help but smile when you see him." His mom also happens to be great at taking my half-baked ideas and finding the perfect outfits for her kids to fit what is in my head.
Earlier this summer, we met at a field with a red barn near sunset. At the date of our photo session, the long grass was already dry which complemented my vision - while it's nice to have green for portrait work, it just wouldn't do for a stylized shoot in which I wanted to illustrate a hot summer day.
I love working with children like Grayson. While he is old enough to direct, he is also full of imagination which is wonderful when I am all out of ideas. Playing with the grass like a flute was his idea. I'm pretty sure that Huckleberry Finn never did that ;)
